Description

Seiwa Tokonole is a water-based leather edge burnishing gum made in Japan and widely considered the standard finishing compound for hand leatherwork. Available from UK stock at Hideout Craft, Tokonole UK stock is available in clear, black and brown — 120g jars.

Unlike wax-based methods or heat burnishing alone, Tokonole works by penetrating the leather fibres at the edge and flesh side, allowing them to be compressed and sealed with friction. The result is a smooth, firm, consistent edge that holds up in regular use across a wide range of leathers.

Key Details

  • Smooth, sealed edges without heat equipment
  • Works on both cut edges and flesh side
  • Fast drying and easy to apply with a finger, cloth or wool dauber
  • Consistent results on vegetable-tanned and many other leathers
  • Water-based, low odour, non-toxic
  • 120g jar
  • Available colours: Clear, Black, Brown

How to Use

Apply a small amount to the leather edge or flesh side, spread evenly, then burnish with canvas, wood, or a slicker using firm friction until the surface becomes smooth and compacted.

Choosing the Right Colour

Clear is the most versatile — it works on any leather colour and lets the natural edge show through. Black and brown are used where a coloured edge is preferred, typically on darker leathers or where the edge colour is part of the finished appearance.

Tokonole is often preferred where a smoother, more refined edge finish is desired, while Gum Tragacanth can be a useful alternative for more traditional edge finishing methods or different leather types.
