The right finish depends on the leather, dye, expected contact, required sheen and how the item will be used.

Vegetable-tanned leather is leather that has been tanned using plant-derived tannins in a slow, traditional process. It is firmer and more structured than chrome-tanned leather, takes edge finishing and burnishing well, and develops a patina with age and use. It is the standard choice for hand leatherwork — wallets, belts, bags, and small goods — because it cuts cleanly, stitches well, and responds predictably to tools.
Edge bevelling removes the sharp corner from a cut leather edge with an edge beveller. For a rounded burnished finish, bevel the visible corners where the construction calls for it, after cutting and before sanding. Choose a size that suits the leather thickness and the amount you want to remove; a thin lining or an edge that will be painted may need a different approach.
The most common leather edge finishing mistakes are skipping the bevel step (which leaves a flat, square edge that won’t burnish into a rounded profile), applying too much burnishing compound, and not sanding properly before burnishing. Most edge problems trace back to preparation rather than the wrong product. Fix each issue by going back to the relevant preparation stage, not by applying more compound on top.
To finish a rounded, burnished leather edge, cut cleanly, bevel the visible corners where the construction calls for it, sand through progressively finer grits, apply a little Tokonole or Gum Tragacanth, and burnish with steady strokes. A painted edge is a different finish: choose the method for the leather and the result you want.
