Description
John James has manufactured needles in England since 1840. The L3912 saddlers harness needle is their standard for hand-stitched leatherwork — a blunt-point, large-eyed needle designed specifically for passing waxed thread through pre-punched stitch holes in leather. The blunt point is deliberate — it follows the hole rather than piercing the leather, producing a clean stitch without splitting fibres at the edge of the hole.
These are the needles used in traditional saddle stitching and hand leatherwork worldwide. Each pack contains 25 needles in a sealed packet.
Available sizes:
- Size 001 – 54mm × 1.02mm: Slightly larger eye for easier threading with heavier thread. Useful when working with thicker waxed thread or when double-threading.
- Size 002 – 54mm × 1.02mm: The standard general-purpose choice for most hand leatherwork. A practical starting point for most makers.
- Size 004 – 48mm × 0.86mm: Finer needle for detailed work, lighter thread gauges and fine leather goods such as wallets and watch straps.
Matching thread:
These needles are sized for use with waxed polyester and linen thread in the 0.45mm to 0.65mm range. We stock Artisan Soul 0.55mm waxed polyester thread in 35 colours — a direct match for everyday use with size 001 and 002.
