Seiwa is a Japanese manufacturer of leathercraft tools and finishing products. They have been supplying the leathercraft trade for decades, and Tokonole — their burnishing gum for leather edges and flesh sides — has become the standard finishing compound for hand leatherwork worldwide.
It is the product that most UK leatherworkers encounter first when they move beyond basic finishes, and it is the one most keep using permanently. There is a reason for that.
What Tokonole Does
Tokonole is a water-based burnishing compound applied to leather edges and flesh sides. Unlike wax-based methods or heat burnishing alone, it works by penetrating the leather fibres at the cut edge, allowing them to be compressed and sealed with friction. The result is a smooth, firm, consistent edge that holds up in regular use across a wide range of leathers.
It also works on the flesh side — the rough inner surface of the leather — compressing loose fibres and producing a smooth, uniform interior surface. This is particularly useful on wallet panels and bag linings where you want a clean finish on surfaces that will be visible in the finished piece.
The Tokonole Range at Hideout Craft
Tokonole Clear
The most versatile option. Clear works on any leather colour and lets the natural edge show through. It is the one to start with if you are not sure which to choose, and the one most leatherworkers use as their default.
Tokonole Black
For pieces where a dark edge is the right finish — black leather goods, or darker leathers where a coloured edge is part of the finished appearance. Applied in the same way as clear, with the colour built into the compound.
Tokonole Brown
For tan and brown leathers where a matching or complementary edge colour suits the piece. As with black, the colour is in the compound — apply and burnish the same way as clear.

Tokonole vs Gum Tragacanth
Both Tokonole and Gum Tragacanth are widely used for leather edge finishing and both can produce excellent results on vegetable-tanned leather. Tokonole is the more modern option — consistent, predictable, and versatile across edges and flesh sides. Gum Tragacanth is the traditional plant-based alternative, with a slightly different character in the finished edge that suits traditional builds and restoration work.
